E-Verify

US economy benefits greatly from labor and resources provided by immigrants. According to the US laws American employers can hire only individuals who can legally work in the country, in other words – foreigners with necessary work authorization.

The US Department of Homeland Security develops and administers a special program that helps employers check their prospective employees’ status. E-Verify is an Internet-based system that allows businesses to verify their employees’ eligibility by comparing data from the Department of Homeland Security and Social Security Administration.

As an employee you have certain rights and responsibilities guaranteed by E-Verify system. Note that you are allowed to start or continue working during the verification process. Prospective employer should not check on you before you have accepted a job offer. Also e-Verify ensures against discrimination on the ground of your citizenship, national origin or immigrant status.

To make sure you pass the verification process successfully you must provide accurate and complete information about yourself and your immigrant status.

You can also check your employment eligibility using E-Verify Self-Check service.
